Yuan Laosi Hotpot @Tropicana Gardens Mall

Updated: Jun 28, 2021

The mala hotpot craze continues with the grand opening of Yuan Laosi Hotpot (袁老四). Located in a Tropicana Gardens Mall, Kota Damansara, Yuan Laosi Hotpot is a Chong Qing style hotpot restaurant that will satisfy all mala lover’s cravings.

Beautifully decorated, Yuan Laosi is grand and spacious with ample tables to accommodate their growing customer base. Complete with the option for a slightly more private booth or more open dining experience, Yuan Laosi even has you covered with private rooms for functions which comes complete with Karaoke setup.

Yuan Laosi gives you the option to go for single, double or triple soup base (~RM50 for any option). During our visit, we went for the triple soup base with their signature mala soup (medium spicy), pork bone soup and tomato soup base. All three soup bases were tasty and well flavored without any sense that excessive msg were used in the making. For those who enjoys spicy, we’d recommend going for the spiciest level as we found the medium spicy option to be a bit lacking.

In terms of the meat options here, their recommended signatures are the fresh frogs, duck intestines, duck gizzards and meatballs. This was in fact our first-time trying duck intestines and gizzards. While we did not really enjoy the duck gizzards as it was hard and chewy, the duck intestines were surprisingly good as it had a jellyfish-like texture. Nevertheless, the ingredients were all good and fresh.

We also tried the lamb and pork slices during our visit. Unlike many of the hotpot places we’ve been to, the meat slices here are slightly thicker and more generous. It really depends on what your preferences are, but if you are more of a thinly sliced shabu meat lover, you may find the cuts here not so to your liking. Regardless, we can assure you that all meat served at Yuan Laosi is of quality and fresh.

Hotpot aside, Yuan Laosi also has a variety of starters/side dishes to choose from. Recommended to us was the crispy fried meat (RM 22), Sichuan style sugar ice jelly (RM 8) and the glutinous rice cake (RM 17).

Yuan Laosi also comes complete with an in-house bar where you can order complement your meal with a wide variety of beer and spirits.
