Chiqui Don – Embark On A Gastronomic Adventure of Food & Wine
We were honored and privileged to be invited to a private wine and dine event hosted by Chiqui Don in collaboration with Albert Wines & Spirits Malaysia. We were treated to a delightful 3-course meal paired with fine wines by Spier.
Before diving into the food, a bit of background, Chiqui Don is a kitchen and bar situated in Damansara Heights, and is a melting pot of casual Asian and Western flavours under one roof. Chiqui Don continuously innovates on their food and beverage offerings with a community sourcing element. Separately, Spier wine is harvested from one of the oldest farms in South Africa. The seaward range made from Seaward grapes are selected from South Africa’s top coastal areas where it is grown in a narrow band close to the ocean.
The afternoon started with a welcome cocktail. The signature Chiqui Cocktail is made with a mixture of dark and white rum, passion fruit and blueberry juice and topped with egg white foam. Definitely recommend it to enjoys a more citrusy sour cocktail! Not only is it tasty and refreshing, it also does a good job in preparing our appetites for the food to come.
We were presented with four appetisers. The Watermelon & Feta Cheese Salad (paired with Spier Seaward’ Sauvignon Blanc), Chili Crab Dip with fried mantou buns (paired with Spier ‘Seaward’ Chenin Blanc), Garlic Chili Sea Bass (paired with Spier ‘Seaward’ Chenin Blanc) and Greek Meatballs made from Australian beef (paired with Spier ‘Seaward’ Cabernet Sauvignon).
While all starters were wonderful, the Chili Crab Dip and Greek Meatballs were definitely our favorite. Filled with chunky crab meat, we could really taste and enjoy the natural flavors of the crab without going through the hassle or cracking and breaking away the crab shell. The Greek meatballs is everything you’d expect from a quality meatball which is juicy, soft and tender.
For our main course, we picked a medium rare Black Angus Rib Eye (paired with Spier ‘Seaward’ Cabernet Sauvignon) and traditional Indian-style Mutton Claypot Rice (paired with Spier ‘Seaward’ Pinotage). The Mutton Claypot Rice definitely stole the spotlight with its uncontested flavors.
The mutton claypot rice topped with a generous serving of chucky lamb cubes is the definition of value for money. Not only do you get to enjoy the well-seasoned long grains, you also get to enjoy plenty of juicy, tender lamb cubes. For the more adventurous foodies, be sure to suck dry the bone marrow for the full experience!
Bringing our delightful culinary experience to a close was the Payasam Panna Cotta and Sizzling Chocolate Fondant.
We’ll definitely be back again soon to try out some of the other dishes and cocktails available at Chiqui Don. Do check us out on Instagram @eatnowkl where we share a short video of our time at Chiqui Don
