Nori Sushi

Nestled right within the proximity of central business districts and entertainment hub of the vibrant

Kuala Lumpur city a newly opened Japanese restaurant, Niro Sushi.

With Japanese restaurants and eateries seen sprouting all about Malaysia in recent days, what can

one look forward to at Nori Sushi? Let’s dive right into the details of our recent visit.

Nori Sushi focuses on fresh, high quality sashimi and cooking ingredients. With the majority of their cooking ingredients flown in directly from Japan, you can be sure only the best is being served.

During our visit, we had the privilege of trying a plethora of sashimi and sushi. For starters, we were presented with 3 custom bite size delights – Gobo roots marinated with soyu, salmon tartar and zucchini salsa. Starters here are commonly prepared based on available fresh ingredients in the kitchen.

Next up was a delicious California Temaki. Flavours of the fresh cucumber came bursting fourth upon sinking our teeth into it followed by the creaminess of the generous slice of avocado which complemented the crabmeat ever so perfectly. In our opinion, the temaki was packed with just the right amount of rice, thus allowing the flavours of the vegetables and crabmeat to shine through.

A visit to a Japanese restaurant would not be complete without some sashimi. There’s not much that needs to be said here, we’re pretty sure the photo showcases the quality and freshness of the sashimi served here. This particular bowl featured hira-zukuri cut maguro, salmon and kampachi.

This next dish – Rosemary Tuna Tartare was refreshingly pleasant and tasty. Definitely unlike any Japanese food we’ve tasted before, this dish combined minced tuna, fruit cubes and rosemary sauce. Upon speaking with the chef, we learned that this particular dish is inspired and influenced by European flavours. It was very much like eating a Japanese-European salsa. Definitely do try out this unique dish during your visit and all the more so if you love rosemary!

We also had the opportunity try another popular dish, the sushi rolls. Not only were they aesthetically pleasing, these Ura Maki tasted as good as it looks if not better. While both the Ebi Tempura Roll (prawn roll topped with crunch flakes) and Washington Roll (Salmon and Avocado) were amazing, it is undoubtedly the Washington Roll that stole our hearts. The Washington Roll did not fail to showcase the freshness of ingredients used in its preparation. Also, we just really enjoy the added creaminess from the avocado and uni.

We went all out during our visit to also try out the grilled squid and softshell crab salad. Our verdict? Nori Sushi really standby their commitment toward serving great food made with quality ingredients. Every item on the menu has been well thought through by the chef and you really can’t go wrong when ordering anything off the menu. May I also just mention that the grilled squid was served with a side of cheese sauce and it was fantastic.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, we ended our night with matcha parfait topped with mango slices and whipped cream. Could not have asked for a better way to end the night.

To sum it up, Nori Sushi led by executive chef, Joe San is extremely dedicated to serving only the finest and freshest ingredients. Every item on the menu is well curated and will not disappoint.

Aside from the wonderful selections on the menu, if you happen to be working in the area or even just dropping by during lunch hours, you can also explore their value-for-money lunch sets which are available daily.

If you are feeling fancy, you may also opt for their omasake option where executive chef, Joe San will prepare a customized meal based on your desired budget and the freshest ingredients available in the kitchen.

Aside from their well thought through menu, Nori Sushi is also thoughtful enough to prepare a cozy sheltered outdoor option for those who prefer.

About Executive Chef - Joe San:

We were in disbelief when we discovered that Joe San, the man behind it all is a Malaysian whom grew up in Johor Bahru. But don’t be fooled as Joe San has spent countless years mastering his art in Japanese culinary under various Japanese chef such as re-known Japanese head chef Ahagon Makatsu san and at one point even spear headed the Harare Sheraton, Japanese restaurant. While Japanese culinary has always been the area of his expertise, he also enjoys travelling across the globe to explore and learn about different flavours and culinary styles. This is evident in some of the items available on the menu such as the Rosemary Tuna Tartare which is very much inspired by European flavours.

Despite Joe San’s extensive experience in Japanese culinary, he remains humble and passionate about his craft as evident in our conversation with him.
